\underbrace command is used to put a (stretchy) under-brace under the argument.

EXAMPLE

1. \underbrace{x + \cdots + x}_{n\rm\ times}^{\text{(note here)}}

   $ \underbrace{x + \cdots + x}_{n\rm\ times}^{\text{(note here)}} $
